Many Photographers are asking should I go Mirrorless right now?
Nikon Z7 II Mirrorless Camera in Studio
I just switched the D850 to the Z7II for in studio only as a main body and so far I'm "happy" with it but not near as much of a change as one may suspect, esp if your old school shooting, manual choosing your focus point esp is you shoot a D850 newer body. Though having focus points cover the entire screen is a dream for me been wanting that option for years. Now the sensors are the same but I was hoping for a better auto focusing system even yet but I do love how snappy it hits focus. Gone are the days of hunting to lock on with these cameras.
For video much improvement, photos not much but some new features if you shoot with a better body. I do hate how small they are. I like beefy body's to hold onto, though the lightness will help my back for long days of shooting. The mini strap will not even be used and had to update FTZ firmware before I could even use it with non s lenses. With that being said I still like it, but I wont be shooting mirrorless for sports or animals. Yes even with animal tracking. Very LIMITED lens options yet for all companies esp for prime shooters! which is me, I love primes. I cannot yet switch over to replace my lens I shoot with as 1/2 are yet to be made for mirrorless cameras. But the 24-70 quality build in both Canon and Nikon are improved in the mirror less versions so that's great as it should have happened sooner. Battery life is 1/2 almost but grips help. Canon R6 is a better option mirror less momentarily, not as great at video but good. I couldn't shoot as well without a top LCD screen, and the back screen being on all the time makes battery life stink and EVF is not up to standard. There's ALOT of benefits unless your shooting with all pro gear already, but marginal if your a professional with professional gear at this time. You can use your F mount lens by purchasing a FTZ adapter ring on Nikon body Mirrorless. They may even have a discount when bought together. Sony I do not believe made one for its customers as they choose to have you buy their lenses only. If you have say a D850 or D5 the cost verses benefit is marginal, which is what I meant by that original post. Anyone shooting D750 or under leaps and bounds for them. For $4,600 CAD adapter included there needs to be value for that. A snappy auto focus is great but not that much better than an D850 or D5. Having more focus points is big for me but maybe not you. Personal shooting styles can matter. Someone starting out seeing depth of field before shooting would be awesome. The viewfinder is nice but if you know your settings well... not necessarily a big perk. Sharper? Well you'd have to compare what your shooting in the same environment, settings etc. DXO Mark is the Industry Standard for real world testing. They keep these camera companies / stores honest when selling. They should have the Z7 II up soon and you can compare body to body and body with lens to body on it. Its a handy tool to use when thinking of purchasing new gear. Hope that clarifies what I meant. If you have the cash why not, if your looking for an upgrade you won't be sad you did. Its just how happy will you be from right now. Anyone shooting d610 and d750 or below will notice big differences in image quality, stabilization and auto focus capabilities. As those bodies were never meant to be sold to working professionals. The lower quality shutters and shutter count before replacement are some just some examples why. They just weren't meant to be work horses like the D850 & D5 etc. Not that you cant choose to use them esp in studio. Hence the options. There can be a lot of benefit for some who are needing an upgrade or wanting better video. z7II just can't do everything the D850 does as well, but the z7II has a handful of features it does better but over all marginal in the benefits if you shoot both.
For studio shooting very happy with the changes very happy I switched. If you want to its awesome new technology to get started on. Especially now with curved sensors on their way I feel these bodies will lose value quickly anyways but who knows how long till the curved mirror less sensor will hit the market with pros in mind. With the new line up rumored to come even some of the 5 bodies this year there's is a part of me who thinks I should have waited for more pro glass to be available. For what its worth not really worth changing over yet if your using professional gear the jump is marginal.
Just my opinion.
