Why The Importance of Photos of Your Children and Family Displayed?

Photographs play a vital roll in everyone’s life, whether its your id card at work or a photo of a passed loved one. For many they are a vital memory ques to help us know who we are and where we came from. They connect us to our present, to our past and remind us of the feelings of places and people and the stories we heard from our childhood. Even pictures of your first home can be a treasured memory in some family’s albums. A family photo often symbolizes a family’s love, growth and future within their family. Your creating memories not just for yourself but for the future generations. As someone whose deeply committed to growth, its incredibly rewarding getting to help clients document this also. If there’s one thing Covid left with us is, you never know when the last chance at a family portrait will be. I lost 10 friends and family and one 19 year old fur baby, in a 15 month period over the last 2 years. I cant begin to tell you how photos on your phone or left on a computer just aren’t enough when those people you hold so dearly suddenly leave your life unexpectedly.

Even more importantly is the powerful effect of photography on children. Most parents and even photographers don’t consider this enough. Children raised with portraits of themselves displayed in the home, grew to have stronger self confidence in their own abilities and self worth. If that isn’t reason enough to print your photos I don’t know what is. Psychologists and experts have done some work in recent decades exploring the link.

A study was conducted in 1975 with a group of fourth graders at a Tennessee school by Tulane University. During a five week period, the children took Polaroid instant photos of themselves with provided cameras in a variety of assigned poses, compositions and expressing various emotions. The children worked with the printed images of themselves and created scrapbooks once a week over those five weeks. Testing of the students and teachers at the conclusion of study revealed a significant increase of 37 percent in the students’ average self-esteem behaviors. This Murfreesboro Study shows evidence personal photography of children seen and enjoyed in a specific way can help boost a child’s self-esteem.

But how?

David Krauss, a licensed psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio says, “I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit. A photographer’s job is to create and make the image look like a safe holding space for kids where they are safe and protected. Kids get it on a really simple level.”

Krauss is one of the earliest pioneers in using people’s personal photography and family albums to assist in mental health counseling and therapy. He co-authored “Photo Therapy and Mental Health” in 1983 that is considered a founding text for the use of photography in therapy.

“It lets children learn who they are and where they fit,” says Judy Weiser. a psychologist, art therapist and author based in Vancouver. “They learn their genealogy and the the uniqueness of their own family and its story. When a child sees a family portrait with them included in the photograph they say to themselves: ‘These people have me as part of what they are, that’s why I belong here. This is where I come from.”

Weiser has spent more than 20 years using all manners of personal photography to assist in the treatment process of her clients. She is considered by many to be the foremost authority on these treatment techniques, called PhotoTherapy.

What has greater impact Digital Images or Printed Art Work?

Obviously, rather than print and display family photographs, families are increasingly enjoying their images in a digital form, be it a mobile device, a laptop, or simply on social media. But does an image on a tablet, computer screen or social media site have the same impact for helping families boost a child’s self-esteem?

“My bias is very simple. I think they (family photographs) should be on the wall,” says Krauss.

“I am very conservative about self-esteem and I think placing a family photo someplace in the home where the child can see it every day without having to turn on a device or click around on a computer to find it really hits home for that child this sense of reassurance and comfort. They have a certainty about them and a protecting quality that nurtures a child. It lets them know where they are in the pecking order and that they are loved and cared for,” says Krauss.

The importance of printed photographs displayed in your living space was echoed by other experts.

“Displaying photos prominently in the home sends the message that our family and those in it are important to one another, and we honor the memories we have experienced,“ says Cathy Lander-Goldberg, a licensed clinical social worker and a professional photographer in St. Louis, Missouri and the director of Photo Explorations, which offers workshops to girls and women using portrait and journaling for self-reflection.

Additionally, Krauss recommends having photographs of that child with their family placed in the child’s bedroom so it can be among the last things they see before sleep and the first thing they may see before beginning their day.

“It says we love you and care about you. You’re important.”

When to Book a Newborn Session

You book your due date or c section date if known. Babies always come when they feel like, so early or late arrival as a professional newborn photographer I plan around this for all scenarios. Worst thing you can do is not book your photographer if you know who you want and then baby comes early. Then you have approx 4 days to find someone last min who will take you last min. I very rarely can accommodate under 30 day contacts. We plan for early or late delivery so you dont worry about when baby arrives once you've booked in. I am a master scheduler I plan for early and late deliveries of all clients when taking booking. Your guaranteed to get in the studio between the 6th to 10th day, if you and the baby's health allows.  That's why booking your photographer 3 - 4 months prior is so important.

When to book

Maternity Sessions are best photographed in the 32nd to 36th week of pregnancy. During this period of your pregnancy, you are starting to get your energy back because most will no longer feel the nauseated.  Not only you feel better during week 32-36, you actually can fit properly into maternity clothes. You’re more likely to feel better before the ninth month due to hormonal changes towards the end of pregnancy.

Newborn Sessions

Are booked by your due date and adjusted as you drop or go into labor. We need to know when these things happen asap, so we can arrange our schedule to photograph them between their 6th and 10th day new.  This is when the baby sleeps best and also when their developmental stage allows for the best possible newborn poses. After bones harden and stomach develops we can still get great images but are less pose possibilities are possible and wont be capable for all the poses you see on our site. Its not safe to do some of the posing after they pass this developmental stage. They also no longer stay curly or bring feet up but flail legs and arms outward. We can still get 100's of great options you just miss the first newness. We can make great images either way.

Rescheduling Sessions may be rescheduled due to illness or injury. If you need to reschedule, please contact me as soon as possible 306-281-7662. If you suspect your baby is unwell, please do not proceed with the session and reschedule for another time. There is no charge to reschedule due to illness or injury, however, once a session has begun, there will be a $50 charge to reschedule.
